Kate Beckinsale is missing from this 3rd installment of the Underworld series but her replacement Rhona Mitra does a great job.
Mitra plays Sonya the daughter of Victor (Bill Nighly) in this prequel which takes place centuries before Selene (Kate Beckinsale’s character even existed) during a time where Lycans served as slaves to vampires.
The Lycan leader Lucian (Michael Sheen) stages an escape and fights back after his masters abuse him. Over all I’d say this prequel was more of a love story as the focus was on the forbidden love between Sonya a vampire and Lucian a lycan.
You see how the basis for the war between vampires and lycans was about love and I for one liked this approach. Although they were of different kinds (or in lay man terms…..different race) their love for one another was so strong that they were willing to die.
Rotten Tomatoes it seems has a different point of view.
Despite the best efforts of its competent cast, Underworld: Rise of the Lycans is an indistinguishable and unnecessary prequel.
