JIA Turns 2

Last Saturday was our sister station JIA 88.3’s 2nd birthday and a party was held at Movida over at St James Power Station.

Overwhelming support is the only way to describe it because it got so packed that we had to turn people away, in fact some of us struggled to get through the crowd just to get to the admin area where all the other staff were.

All in all it was a nice day to hang out with some colleagues and of course to lend our support to JIA cos they are our sister station. Oh and you know this birthday cake was damn nice………wah I eat until shiok ah!

The news team was in attendance in full force, here’s some of them in the picture below. Angel from JIA is in there with John, Ryan and Li Ling from news.

Some familiar faces also came down, here’s You Yi with Kay. Was nice seeing here after quite a while since she left us.

Some other ex staff like Alvin came down and needless to say contributed to the ‘talk cock’ session…..hahaha! He’s together with Suzanna and Alicia.

As for me………..well I popped up from time to time……

By the way, these pics were taken from some of the members of Safra radio, I didn’t really take pics nor bring my camera……the side effects of a bad memory.

Danceworks 2009 Cat II Prelims

Final Danceworks prelims from me happened on 21 March 09 and this was my fave among all, firstly it was the cat 2 prelims and certainly one of the most colourful. The contestants were from secondary schools from around Singapore and even an International School.

The energy was amazing, screaming and screaming the cheers were non stop all afternoon. And that really was a boost in everyone’s spirit to push harder and dance better for a place in the finals.

dance3-0138

Unfortunately not everyone made it into the final as there were only 4 places up for grabs. My fave girls from CHIJ Toa Payoh didn’t manage to get in so I’ll mention them here cos they were very nice to me throughout the afternoon. That’s all of them in the picture below seated in front of me.

Next best thing about the event was the venue which was Vivo city amphi theatre. Nice packed area yet with space to walk around and interact with the crowd.

Makes doing the Q and A segment more fun since I can pretty much pick on anyone I want……haha! Enjoy the compilation video below.

Confessions Of A Shopaholic

Shopping can be a deadly deadly addiction, Isla Fisher demostrates just that in the movie Confessions of a shopaholic which is based on a novel of the same name.

article-1150664-03817611000005dc-660_468x348

She stars as your average young executive writer who is looking to work for a big time fashion magazine. Well she doesn’t quite get the part but she does land a writers’ job at a money magazine under the same parent company.

Trouble is, she has a credit card bill……a very big credit card bill and the debt collector is out to get her. She write’s under the persona “The girl in the green scaf” a person who gives advice on spending and tips from a very down to earth point of view. She’s a breath of fresh air to the magazine and the bosses love her! Wait till they hear about her credit card bill.

Now the fun begins when she trieds to attend shopping rehab to curb her addiction to shopping which caused her to have that huge credit card bill in the first place. Of course everyone lives happily ever after but it’s the process of getting there that was a joy to watch,

One of the best things for me was the many colourful outfits that Isla wore throughout the film, I thought that really brought out both her personality as an actress and the personality of the character she was playing.

12 Rounds

Well this film we have WWE champion John Cena playing New Orleans Police Detective Danny Baxter. When Baxter crosses a thief after stopping him from getting away with a multi-million-dollar heist.

12-rounds-poster-1

After escaping from prison, the theif is out for revenge and Baxter is about to have a very bad day.

He gets Baxter to complete 12 rounds of dangerous games and tasks with the life of Baxter’s girlfriend being held as leverage.

Typical plotline but enjoyable. Fans of John Cena would definately appreciate it as a good step up from “The Marine” also staring John Cena.

Nothing To Declare

Another ESP event in conjuction with Davis Guitar was organised at Wala Wala a week ago and as always I was more than happy to help ESP out with their showcases.

It was the relaunch of the band Nothing to Declare, the band went seperate ways about 2 years ago as most of the Band members had embarked on solo projects in Japan.

New members join the band to make up the 4 piece. One original member still remains and there’s also another familiar face from the local music scene and he is none other than Jude Lee from West Grand Boulevard.

2647_57976083126_700258126_1578845_5292171_n

Masashi Kimura is the only remaining member of the original line up and now under his lead, Nothing to Declare has been relaunched and will go on tour in Japan starting 20 March 09.

All the best on the tour and make us proud!

Clash At The Quay

Everytime it happens each season, it’s called the “biggest match of the year” and it always lives up to it hype! This season Man Utd v Liverpool was being broadcasted at Clarke Quay Central Square with the Football Channel crew flown into Singapore specially for this broadcast.

Seb and me were there to do live reports for the station and of course to drive the crowd there via the airwaves! We met up with fellow ‘On the ball’ pundit Kevin McCormick who is a big pool fan and presented him our Power 98 styled Liverpool jersey………of which I’m the only one who wears Man Utd…haha!

p1000365-1

Everyone was all relaxed before the game, just me and Seb filling our roving reports, chilling and getting ready for the big showdown.

p1000374-1

Game gets off to a good start for the Red Devils as we took the elad through a Cristiano Ronaldo penalty but 5 mins later this was going to be the worse night of my football life!

p1000391-1

Photos being snapped away as I continue to watch in horror as my team made one error after another, conceding 4 goals after a promising start.

p1000399-1

Nooooooooo…………….oh well I tried to smile for a proper photo of the On the ball crew!

p1000401-1

Oh the horror as the final goal is scored and the rest of the crew celebrate behind me…..Kevin keeps tapping me as I watch in disbelieve……….those life long Liverpool fans were jumping and I was sinking.

p1000410-1

1 – 4 the final score………..I still couldnt believe it. The consolation was meeting Joe Morrison who is the host of Football Channel, he’s a big Newcastle fan so he wasn’t too bothered about the scoreline….hahaha!

p1000377-1

Former Liverpool and Chelsea player Nigel Spackman said I was wearing the wrong jersey……….basket!

p1000419-1

Another legend,  former Everton player Peter Reid was also there as one of Joe Morrison’s guests. It was an honour to meet these great players.

p1000421-1

Here was the fun part, the post match interview. Before going on, the producer said be as much of a sad fan while I was at it…………….that wasn’t too difficult. Seb was happily waiting his turn!

p1000423-1

“Oh the horror, oh the pain”

p1000424-1

All in all it was great fun, even though we lost we had to gentlemen about it and embrace the fact that Man Utd and Liverpool fans can come together and enjoy a match but in the end, there can be only one winner…………unfortunately it wasn’t my team on the night.

Quintuple

Oh yeah baby time to blog about good old Man Utd…….getting in full gear now that the season hits the 3/4 mark. Beating Inter Milan 2  – 0 at OT was damn good I tell you.

A quintuple is on many pundits lips as the temptation to even think that Man Utd are on the form that will take them to a 5 trophy sweep this season. They already have 2, which are the World Club Champions and the English League Cup but even Sir Alex Ferguson is cautious about such talk. After all, no team has ever won the Champions League 2 years in a row.

Whatever it is lets enjoy it cos we’re in the quater finals of the CL and we’re doing fine in the league and hopefully we maintain the form, the team play and moral keeps up!

Dragonball Evolution

Dragonball Evolution is based on the popular Japanese Comic book series. This film centres on Goku (Justin Chatwin) who is your average teenager except he poses a high level of martial arts skills which he has trained for since young.

After the death of his grandfather, he is tasked with protecting the Earth from an endless stream of rogues bent on dominating the Universe and controlling the mystical objects from which the film takes its name

This movie lacks alot of background stories but there is some brief guideline on the event’s of the past where the movie is concerned. Don’t expect it to follow closely to the original though cos I don’t see much trace of that anywhere.

My suggestion is just leave your brains at the door, I did and you know……..I actually enjoyed the movie that way. Call it mindless entertainment but hey that’s the whole point………pointless! haha!

dragonballevolutionpressconference0fmukf9ahsvl

One bright spark for me was Jamie Chung, She plays Chi Chi, she’s tall and provided all the eye candy necessary to pull through 86mins of this film.

To Boldly Go

I’ve always been more of a Star wars fan but I’m not afraid to admit that there’s been a soft spot for Star Trek in me. Esp considering I grew up watching Star Trek: The next generation on TV, everyone remember Patrick Steward as Jean Luc Picard in that.

3114521462_91ae9fbde0

After the series was stopped, a number of movies spawned with this new generation. Big hits in the cinema and of course always refreshing to indulge in.

But none has captivated me as much as the upcoming prequel directed by JJ Abrams. As a director Abrams has always delivered intelligent story-lines to movies. Take his work on Mission Impossible 3 as an example. that film didn’t turn out to be your regular Tom Cruise action machine. Instead what we got was a brilliant plot and very well executed scenes……gotta give full credit to Abrams for that.

His vision is certainly one of the most unique film directions of our time, much like Bryan Singer. Well the final trailer to the new Star Trek movie is up and it’s got that haunting Batman Begins feel to it. Come May 8th…..we’ll see if Abrams delievers and if this crew can boldly go where no man has gone before.

Danker out!

p.s. You can check out the lastest Star Trek trailer on the featured video segment of this website

Danceworks Cat 3 Prelims

I was really excited about the next round of Danceworks. Basically this competition is a dance competition organised by the National Council Against Drug Abuse and Central Narcotics Bureau. This week was the Cat 3 prelim round which is the open cat round for youths / students aged 25 and below.

p1000343-1

The standard was definately higher than the earlier cat 1 finals I hosted and the crowd was certainly louder. Had alot of fun messing around with them and getting them up on stage for fun and games.

The main focus of course was the dance competition itself where 29 teams went head to head in showing off their dance skills and keeping to the theme “Dance your way to a drug-free life”

p1000344-1

In the end the top 4 teams earned themselves a slot in the grand finals happening on 4 Apr 09. Now it rained heavily but that didn’t sway the crowd who packed the open plaza next to Plaza Singapura. Even I was shocked at how packed and hot it was……that was pretty draining.

Through the heat and stuffyness the teams battled it out for those top 4 spots but in my opinion, everyone was a winner because they were dancing for a good cause. Keeping healthy and staying away from drugs.

p1000349-1

This was a fun gig, with great audience participation and the contestants were pretty nice too! It always feels good to be part of the culture of dance even though I can’t really dance myself.

After that was a well deserved meal and a catch up session with some old friends……Katong Laksa style!

p1000352-1

Dinner was funny man cos Eugene (not pictured) brought his dad along……the stories we heard from him were damn funny.

And that’s how you have a great weekend…..peace!
