The Expendables

The Expendables is a hard-hitting action/thriller about a group of mercenaries hired to infiltrate a South American country and overthrow its ruthless dictator.

Written, directed by and starring Sylvester Stallone, The Expendables brings together a dynamic cast including Jason Statham, Jet Li, Dolph Lundgren, Randy Couture, Steve Austin, Terry Crews and Mickey Rourke.

How can you not watch this film? Especially if you are an old scold action fan. I mean the plot line is like the actors thinning hairlines but the action is loud and it’s massive!

It’s like the emotions of Rocky with the action of Rambo and the thrills of Demolition man! Need I say more?

The Last Airbender

To be honest I’ve never actually watched the cartoon before I stepped into the cinema but I found the story to be an interesting one. It’s not of this world, totally without logic, something of a fantasy world which is good…..means less brain power to think.

However a problem I found was that despite flashy special effects, the film doesn’t quite live up to it’s potential due to the kids acting in it. Not so much the controversy of non-asians acting in asian roles BUT the poor acting.

The delivery of dialogue was bad, it was like kids acting. You could tell the inexperience from the actors and that was the biggest let down for me.

Good news though, I am curious enough to hope for a sequel.

Salt

Who is Salt? In the movie trailer CIA agent Evelyn Salt is accused by a walk-in Russian informant to be a Russian spy. To make matters worse, she escapes the CIA headquarters to free her name and find her husband.

It’s your typical Angelina Jolie film. This amazing actress has clearly aged because you can see some wrinkles on her face but she is still incredibly fit. It’s like her physique has remained the same since Tomb Raider.

Is it a good film?

Yes, it’s definitely worth the watch if you are an action buff. The plot like is simple really although there is a twist at the end. She kinda leaves you unsure of her allegiance. Is she American or Russian? Then at some point of the film you will surprised at her true identify but her actions will leave questions in your head till explains herself at the end of the film.

Go catch it! Theres Angelina Jolie staring in it after all.

Inception

We have many secrets locked inside our mind. Now imagine that you can conceptualize those secrets locked up in a safe in a heavily guarded fortress deep inside your head.

Well that’s the idea that Christopher Nolan has brought to life in this film staring many Batman Begins alumni from the likes of Ken Watanabe, Michael Caine and Cillian Murphy. These all stars are joined by lead actor Leonardo Dicaprio and Ellen Page.

This team has the technology to invade your dreams and steal your deep dark secrets. Manipulators of your dream they may be but Leonardo Dicaprio’s character is the most troubled of all and has the most dangerous of dreams within the team……Director Christopher Nolan very cleverly and pace-fully plays this out. One of the big highlights for me.

Is it worth the watch?

DUH! It’s a Christopher Nolan film! It’s so smart that there have been sites online dedicated to different theories of the ending of the film. One of them is www.inceptiontheories.com, a website dedicated to decoding the inception behind inception.

Despicable Me

3D disappointments have been turning up in cinemas and Avatar for me remains the only true 3D film ever made. And here with have the animated feature Despicable Me, perhaps using a similar graphic to “The Incredibles” won’t disappoint in terms of 3D animation and that proved right.

So we know for a fact, the 3D is good but what about the film? Well for starters it has Steve Carrel as the voice of Gru, a villain bent on stealing the moon…….ok lame but it’s funny la. It is seriously just plain stupid but really that’s the essence of the film that makes it so funny. Character voices by Steve Carrel and Russel Brand really showcase their talent too.

Hit or Miss?

Definite hit! I would pay just to watch scenes of the minions…..they are so cute and funny. There is a classic scene where one minion grabs another minion from behind and breaks his back…..then he shakes the minion and it begins to glow! Hahahaha it’s so funny, I really do hope they do a sequel.

I like how the origins of the minions are untouched……..yeah it provides a mystery but really do we care? They are cute and they make us laugh so that on it’s own is good enough for the audience………kinda like there’s no need to make a cartoon complicated.

The Twilight Saga: Eclipse

Erm I’m not really a Twilight fan…..hahaha! But since I saw the first 2 I figured I should watch the 3rd one. Critics online have claimed that this is the most action packed for the trilogy so far and they were not too far off.

For me the first 2 had too much talk, it was slow and boring till the end climax.

Is it worth watching?

Well you really don’t need my opinion because if you are a Twilight fan, nothing will stop you from catching this film. If you are not a fan then I would suggest you go with a fan.

The Karate Kid

Remake of the year for me. This movie caught my attention with the trailer. I’m a big fan of the old Karate Kid and when I saw it was Jaden Smith and Jackie Chan acting in it I was like………….What???

Then I found out that Will Smith and Jada Picket Smith were producing it and I had some faith restored. No way they would allow this legendary movie to screw up……….if they do, they deserve jail time!

In Columbia Pictures’ remake of The Karate Kid, 12-year-old Dre Parker (Jaden Smith) could’ve been the most popular kid in Detroit, but his mother’s (Taraji P. Henson) latest career move has landed him in China.

Not so good news for Dre but soon after arriving in China heĀ  falls for his classmate Mei Ying – and the feeling is mutual – but cultural differences make such a friendship impossible.

Even worse, Dre’s feelings make an enemy of the class bully, Cheng. In the land of kung fu, Dre knows only a little karate, and Cheng puts Dre on the floor with ease.

Hope arrives in the form of maintenance man Mr. Han (Jackie Chan), who is secretly a master of kung fu. As Han teaches Dre that kung fu is not about punches and parries, but maturity and calm, Dre realizes that facing down the bullies will be the fight of his life.

This movie is so much like the old classic but yet nothing like it. I loved it, to me it’s so far the best movie I’ve seen all year. It’s the kind of movie that makes you wanna be on Dre’s side, root for the little guy and then shed tears of joy when he comes out on top.

Jaden is so much like his dad Will, this boy certainly has a bright future ahead of him.

Killers

Typically the movie starts of with Jen Kornfeldt (Katherine Heigl) trying to recover from a sudden break-up and she believes she’ll never fall in love again.

But when she reluctantly joins her parents on a trip to Nice, Jen happens to meet the man of her dreams, the dashing, handsome Spencer Aimes (Ashton Kutcher). Three years later, her seemingly impossible wish has come true: she and Spencer are newlyweds living the ideal suburban life – that is, until the morning after Spencer’s 30th birthday when bullets start flying.

It turns out Spencer never bothered to tell Jen he’s also an international super-spy, and now Jen’s perfect world has been turned upside down.

And you thought suburban life was easy.

Eh……this movie is a little lame la. I mean it’s not convincing. Sure Ashton has grown up but he didn’t convince me as a spy. Perhaps it would have worked better as a dark comedy instead of a romantic comedy.

Prince Of Persia

Ahhh nice one! If ever there was a video game that I hoped would make it to the big screen, it’s The Prince of Persia.

Who better to take on the challenge than the team that brought the “Pirates of the Caribbean” trilogy to the big screen, Walt Disney Pictures and Jerry Bruckheimer Films bring you this epic action-adventure set in the mystical lands of Persia.

The movie centers around a rogue prince (Jake Gyllenhaal) who reluctantly joins forces with a mysterious princess (Gemma Arterton) who is really hot btw…….gosh I love her accent.

Anyway……they race against dark forces to safeguard an ancient dagger capable of releasing the Sands of Time – a gift from the gods that can reverse time and allow its possessor to rule the world.

Directed by Mike Newell (“Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire”) with a cast that includes Sir Ben Kingsley and Alfred Molina aka Doctor Octopus…..hahaha!

I do like how Gyllenhaal’s movements do resemble the video game which was a plus point for me. The story is so so but the action sequences are nice. And of course the babe factor in Gemma Arterton.

Shrek Forever After

It’s kinda like a drama series. You start out as the underdog in life, meet the woman of your dreams, prove your worth to her parents then become a dad………and then you get bored, you start reliving your glory years, start wishing you had the same fire and then you become frustrated.

What do you say? ……..I wish I never got married…….hahahaa! Hey animated movies are so innocent anymore, they care deep meaning and that’s what was achieved with this final installment of Shrek.

Shrek is frustrated, he wants to be a real oger again and so is granted his wish via a contract with rumpelstiltskin. Hahaha the adventure that follows is hillarious and with meaning too.

It’s the last one they are doing and rightly so. The 3rd installment got some pretty bad reviews but this film sets things right for the chapter to finally close.
