Only The Brave

I had the most pleasant surprise given to me on Monday after my friends Sourav and Rachelle returned to Singapore from a nice trip to Spain! Woot…..I wanna go to Spain too! It seems Ivy had made arrangements with them to help me hunt down the limited edition Diesel Only The Brave Iron Man 2 cologne.

I’ve been looking all over Singapore for this for months, only to be told that it hasn’t arrived yet……like it’s been out for so many months in the US and even the Iron Man 2 is coming soon and this cologne still isn’t out? Can’t be lor……oh well I lived with it and stopped searching a few weeks ago.

And now I find to my surprise that Sourav and Rachelle themselves went on a little hunt all over Spain for this and found it in Barcelona, home of the La Liga Champions!!!

Thank you so much guys, all 3 of you! This really is one awesome gift I won’t forget!

Housewarming @ The Laus

First of all, the place was damn far la….all the way in Yee Tee. Haha! Jenny who was part of the Business Studies Club back in Temasek Poly organised a housewarming party over the weekend and it was a nice time to meet up with some old friends.

To be honest I haven’t met up with them in almost 6 or 7 years……apart from bumping into each other a few times down Orchard road but hey it’s like that after you graduate, you move on with life, try and settle down and then catch up again.

Everyone’s changed yet everyone’s the same, haha it’s kinda hard to explain but you know there was this sense of familiarity but yet you could tell that we have all grown up in different ways. Like our outlook on life and what not.

I missed out on the housewarming gift we bought, the majong table cos I left before Selena got there but I gotta hand it to Jenny’s hubby Benjamin. The dude has his own game room filled with DVDs, a plasma TV, Sony PS3 and a sofa bed! Hahahaha I know what I want when my turn comes.

Jenny I never met your husband before that day but I must say you both make a wonderful couple. Here’s to a blessed marriage and a home filled with happiness!

SAFRA Gathering

A nice get together before the weekend among the the old guard at Mono at St James where Sebastian also bid farewell to Power98FM.

Funny how it was most of the old faces who turned up, all of us have moved on to take on new challenges in life but there was that bond because all of us have roots in radio. The amount of years of experience among us was quite interesting cos as we were catching up, we seem to remember how we all had our own hard road to getting good at being Radio DJs.

Karaoke really isn’t my thing but I was just happy to catch up and spend some time with them.

Wonder when the next gathering will be…..oh well till then..

Danker out!

Companion

We all have objects that we own which signify a moment in our lives be it happy, sad or challenging times. For me it is my  bedside friend, my comic books.

Comic book characters were first created during World War 1, these heroes were meant to be companions for kids whose fathers were away at war. It meant to give them a sense of hope and to inspire them to see the hero within their fathers, some of whom they may have never met.

For me, I’ve always loved the colour of comics and when I was young I wanted to be a superhero. Haha, I guess I liked how they defied the odds and always came out larger than life. It was that “superheros don’t lose” spirit which inspired me. Perhaps that’s why today I believe that impossible is nothing (haha i know it’s a sports slogan)

About 3 or 4 years ago I decided to buy one comic a month, previously I would only indulge in it once in a while but since I was working and could afford it I thought why not just buy a little memory for that month.

Let me share with you each point in my life that these books signify.

Marvel Chronicles

My prized collection is this Marvel encyclopedia costing me over 80 bucks. Large hardcover book which I took a few months to decide whether to buy or not but in the end I though heck, I’m a fan, I gotta own it.

It was also a good time in my life where things were going very smoothly for me, in my personal life and my career especially.

Iron Man Ultimate Guide

This Iron Man ultimate guide signifies my farewell to radio. It was a gift from Harry, Jerald and Mabel from the Power98FM morning crew and since it was only at Power98FM that I started to be known as Singapore’s biggest Iron Man fan having appeared as Iron Man in full suit as part of being the official radio station for Iron Man 2.

Spiderman Back In Black

This book is part of my past and how I started as a radio DJ. I used to buy a comic as abit of a reward from doing a voiceover, you know it’s like spend a portion of my earnings on a comic and save the rest.

The early stages of my career was not easy, in fact it was one heck of a rollercoaster ride just like the trails that Peter Parker faced in this Back in black phase where he donned the black suit of Spiderman again after watching Captain America die.

Captain America Reborn

This book represents coming out of a particularly challenging phase of my life. Not many people know this but in 2008 I was diagnosed with Thyroid. I was on medication for one and a half years and due to my condition it was not as easy as before when it came to handling stress. I’ve never been on such long term medication before in my life and was always fit so it took a while for me to accept this.

In Oct 2009 during a routine Thyroid check up the doctor found that my blood pressure had jumped from the previous month which was always healthy. For months I struggled to keep my blood pressure down, stress and emotional difficulties added to it and all I longed for was my health back. Due to my high blood pressure I had to pull out of some marathons which again made me lose self belief having been a healthy person before all this.

In Apr 2010 I was cleared of Thyroid having successfully completed the course of medication and my blood pressure dropped out of the danger zone and has looked healthy since. I passed my Ippt without any effects of HPB and well I kinda felt like Captain America Reborn. That’s why I bought this book to mark this stage in my life.

Batman & Robin: Batman Reborn

The future really is what this book means to me. I’ve left radio to pursue new challenges yet my love for entertainment still remains strong. I find myself still drawn to the industry and perhaps that’s why I still do shows and I’ve even been asked to return.

Dick Grayson has taken over as Batman even after Bruce Wayne has passed away. Batman the persona that Bruce created can never die. The person behind the mask may be different but Batman remains the same. Maybe for me my role may be different but the passion that fuels me and made me into a successful radio personality remains the same. Maybe for me, Elliott Danker is not done.

I’m gonna leave you with that for now, there’s more to come as you can see from my little comics corner in my room. I’ll share with you next time what the rest of them mean to me.

Take care and don’t forget the little moments in your life.

Fast Cars & Great Music

I recently made my way down to Singapore post at Takashimaya to collect my 3-day walkabout tickets for the Singapore Grand Prix. It’s running into it’s 3rd year now and I’m still just as excited even though I’ve been attending the event every year.

To my surprise, the entertainment line up for this year’s GP was announced and I’m even more excited. You see, last year the Backstreet boys stole the headlines and it was a nice touch of nostalgia for me and my friends who were teens in the 90s listening to old favorites.

This year it’s gonna be crazy cos one of my fave bands, Daughtry is coming to town.

Here’s what the official website says:

As part of the circuit park’s multi-million dollar entertainment schedule, race promoter Singapore GP has unveiled its list of headliners at the 2010 FORMULA 1 SINGTEL SINGAPORE GRAND PRIX. This year’s star-studded line-up includes Mariah Carey, Missy Elliott, Daughtry, and Adam Lambert appearing at a mega stage in the Padang, which is accessible to all ticketholders.

Youth Olympic Games

Announced just over 2 years ago, it was finally time for the first ever Youth Olympic Games. This promised to be groundbreaking and with the whole world watching, it was time for Singapore to put itself on the map yet again.

Many people around the world have been wowed by Singapore’s hosting abilities with events such as the Singapore Grand Prix. It’s a good bet, dependable and always ready to put on a good show…..attributes leading to us being selected as a host nation.

It took about roughly 2 years to prepare for this which is pretty short notice given that a host nation usually has 4 years to prepare for the Olympics but hey we are Singapore and the international event kicked off at The Float @ Marina Bay with the central business district and Marina Bay Sands resort making the canvas to the performances.

Funny how this is a week after the National Day parade where we already saw alot of fireworks. This time for the YOG opening ceremony there were fireworks after just about every performance.

Of course there were your typical cultural performances featuring some old child hood games as the themes but then the show moved on to more abstract art performances which was refreshing. Ivan Heng the choreographer certainly outdid himself.

This one was a performance called match stick or something like that……fire coordination was crucial here cos the fire was bursting in sync to the music.

The arrival of the torch marked the finale filled with fireworks. The torch itself resembled a lighthouse but the tip of the flame comes out of the glass. The flame has somewhat a spiral effect if you are close enough to see……I had my binos so that helped.

It was a great experience and i’m glad i could be a part of it. I never actually had my photo taken with fireworks in the background so this was a first for me.

More tote bags for me…….going green even with the goodie bags.

Expanding The Hall Of Armors

I’m still waiting for my hottoys War machine and Mark IV to arrive but in the meantime I managed to get my hands on a Mark IV bust courtesy of Movie Replicas at Plaza Sing.

This is a nice fit in my quest to have my very own hall of armors in my room and you can see the detail and finishing is perfect. Btw, the chest piece and eyes light up pretty brightly so it was hard to take a pic of it.

Looks like this can be a night light too….hahaha!

She sits pretty on top of my shelf with just one space below available for the War Machine. I might have to do some major rearrangements with the War machine, Mark IV, V and VI still to come……gosh I am really gonna be Iron Man!

Football Weekly Debut

If you have been following me on Facebook you would know by now that I will be writing for Football Weekly magazine among some of the new projects that I will be doing.

I made my big debut today in spectacular fashion I might add because it was a cover story about Wayne Rooney. Is he world class or overrated? Well that’s what I explore in issue 411.

This was really a big big surprise for me because all I did was submit my idea and final article for the week and my editor liked it so much that he decided to make it the cover story for the week.

I’m new to writing to be given the honour of cover story for my first article was really something special.

Don’t worry Rooney fans, I don’t slam him I just explore the makings of what determines a world class player. Honestly i think Rooney is right up there, you just gonna be more objective with your assessment of the player.

I’ll keep giving updates of articles when I write them and which issues they will appear in so you can go get your copy of Football Weekly.

Beautiful Bali

I’ve never been to Bali before. My friends keep telling me to go because it’s like paradise, it’s a place to help take your mind off things. Seeing as how I’m gonna be on a nice long break I figured it was high time I make the trip down to paradise. No regrets!

This board is a classic and what I call unchanged technology. Think about it, during your younger days when you took a plane this board has existed in Terminal 1 and it’s unchanged. Just a simple piece of work that’s so effective that there’s no need for major improvements.

Prime Villa – My home for 4 days

It was a nice long weekend kinda trip up to Bali where I stayed at a place called Prime Villas. It was not near the sea but near a stable and a rice paddy field. Pretty interesting actually and the air was sooooo fresh!

Check out the day and night view of my private pool! Hahahaha the water was freezing cold but hey it’s still a private pool!

Actually I think i could live in a place like this all year round…….no need for HDB la, just build more villas for sale in Singapore.

Seafood by the beach

Now, my mad friend Jensen practically lives in Bali. He was my tour guide to the shopping spots as well as food areas. The highlight was seafood by the beach. We went there at about 5pm or so which is very good timing. You can see the beach in daylight then sit and eat with the sun setting in the background.

You can see in the background how popular this place is, we were lucky we could get seats but then again the “Local” Jensen planned his timing well.

Remember A&W?…..hahaha it still exists in Bali if you miss the taste!

Next time i go back to Bali I’m gonna stay at a villa by the beach……nice sea breeze in the morning should be an experience! Other highlights of my Bali holiday were the spa trips.

Full body bath and spa and the way they massaged was just heavenly……so much dead skin came off me that i never knew my skin could be this smooth. In fact if you were there with me, you would have been surprised at how I kept touching myself. Hahahahaha!
